EXPEDITION OVERVIEW
Our destination for this trip is the jungles of Central Kalimantan (Borneo) to see the orangutan in its natural environment. We may come across Tom, the dominant male at the famous Camp Leakey feeding station. We will see both reintroduced and wild orangutans as well as a host of other rain forest animals. The Tanjung Puting National Park is home to rare and interesting species including the proboscis monkey and the false gavial, a strange looking crocodile. But, it is the orangutan that most people come here to visit. It's sheer beauty and passive demeanor endears one of our closest relatives to our hearts.

After visiting this wonderful animal's natural environment, we will spend a day touring around the area of Pangkalan Bun. Nikko Konyk, the Vice President for The Orangutan Project – Canada and Gary Shapiro, the President of The Orangutan Project- USA (aka Orang Utan Republik Foundation) will take you to some of their favorite places and show you why it’s a unique location.

Through this expedition we will be raising funds to support the orangutans survival and each participant will be adopting an orangutan as well as replanting trees to ensure the future of their habitat.

This special Canada & USA TOP led 7 day fundrasing tour we will take you to the Tanjung Puting National Park, which is found in central Kalimantan. Tanjung Puting National Park is a unique place in itself. It is not only home to the orangutan, but also the rare proboscis monkey and the false gavial crocodile. During your time in the park you will be living aboard our river boat known as a klotok, with one night will be at the Rimba Eco-Lodge. The klotok is well equipped with basic amenities, and at night you will sleep on deck on comfortable mattresses including mosquito nets. Our crew will cook up delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The klotoks come fully equipped with safety features including life vests and a first aid kit. When not walking through the jungle, we can relax on deck watching the wildlife, read a book or just laze the day away.

YOUR 2 SPECIAL GUESTS HOSTS
You will be joined on this tour by a person who we beieve will make this expedition very special and a most memorable and rewarding experience for all our guests.

Nikko Konyk. Nikko’s passion for animals and their welfare started at a very young age. As a youngster she was an accomplished horse show jumper and now rides in the dressage discipline. However her passion was for primates and as soon as she had the opportunity she embarked in her life-long dream trip to visit the orangutans in Borneo. Once there she had the opportunity to see how magnificent these creatures are and all of the environmental threats that they are facing. She was determined to do something about this. Within a year she had returned to Sumatra twice. Realizing that the biggest challenge that these marvellous creatures face is the loss of habitat due to the deforestation, development of large palm oil plantations, mining and illegal logging she connected with Leif Cocks, the founder of The Orangutan Project. It was not long after that the she offered to establish The Orangutan Porject Canada, a non-profit organization of which she is a Director.

Nikko talks about this tour.
"I have been on two trips with Orangutan Odysseys and was so amazed and captivated by the standards, knowledge, passion and the animal welfare standards that I decided I could not come home to Canada and go back to life as I knew it.  With the help of Leif Cocks and a few others we brought The Orangutan Project to Canada to continue to educate and raise money for the wonderful work being done to conserve the orangutan's habitat.  Now, with Orangutan Odysseys I want to share what I have seen and what drives me to be part of The Orangutan Project.  I now invite you to come and join Leif and myself on this Canadian Orangutan Tour."

Gary Shapiro is president of TOP-USA aka Orang Utan Republik Foundation. Gary has been involved with Tanjung Puting and the study area for 40 years, knows the river well (he studied its rivers in 1986) and many of the orangutans personally. He has previously hosted tours to Tanjung Puting National Park numerous times for family, friends, and for Orangutan Odysseys.

Gary talks about hosting this tour.
“It is always a privilege for me to visit Tanjung Puting National Park and to share my experience and expertise with members of our tour groups. My relationships with the orangutans at Camp Leakey, such as Princess and Siswi, are very special, and there are some residents that I met in the late 1970s that are still alive. They all have amazing and unique personalities.”

EXPEDITION GOALS
Our goal is to provide our guests with a unique experience while observing wild and semi-wild orangutans in their natural habitat. We will provide you with a safe platform to observe other wildlife that Borneo has to offer including proboscis monkeys, gibbons and more. We will also provide you with comprehensive information about the destination you are in, so that you are fully informed of your surroundings. Further our joint efforts with The Orangutan Project continues to support conservation programs in Borneo in Sumatra.
