EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

Our 8-Day Kutai NP and Samboja Orangutan Experience will guide you through the wonders of East Kalimantan, beginning with Kutai National Park. This unique destination is home not only to orangutans but also to the rare proboscis monkey and the false gavial crocodile. During your time in the park, you will stay in simple accommodations used by researchers and rangers. Nights will be spent on deck on comfortable mattresses with mosquito nets, equipped with basic amenities. Our dedicated team will prepare delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout your stay.

Embark on a unique journey that combines adventure with meaningful contribution. This specially designed expedition offers the opportunity to witness the magnificent orangutan in its natural habitat while actively participating in the preservation of their environment for future generations. Our ongoing commitment includes sponsoring orphaned orangutans, expanding rainforest protection through the Safeguard program (a vital jungle patrol against poaching and illegal logging), and providing essential financial support.

Kutai National Park in East Kalimantan beckons with its rare and fascinating wildlife. However, it is the orangutan, our close relative, that draws most visitors. Their captivating beauty and gentle nature are truly enchanting. This expedition will allow you to observe both wild and rehabilitated orangutans, offering intimate encounters with these incredible creatures in their natural surroundings. If you seek adventure with a purpose, this is the expedition for you.

East Kalimantan's Kutai National Park boasts remarkable biodiversity. Its landscape transitions from coastal mangrove swamps and lowland rainforests to gentle inland hills and alluvial plains, marking the beginning of the deep jungle. Towering dipterocarpus, valuable ebony, and ironwood trees are scattered throughout. The exotic wildlife includes the iconic orangutan, found only on Sumatra and Borneo, alongside a rich array of other forest inhabitants and bird species. Kalimantan's dense jungles and expansive wetlands have historically isolated the region, making it a destination for intrepid travelers. Here, you can immerse yourself in the vibrant traditional culture and witness a stunning variety of exotic flora and fauna through captivating jungle explorations and unforgettable wildlife encounters.Samboja Lestari: A Haven of Restoration

Samboja Lestari, a restored tropical rainforest near Balikpapan in East Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, stands as a testament to conservation efforts. Established by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS), this 2,000-hectare sanctuary provides a secure environment for rehabilitated orangutans while also benefiting local communities. Since its inception in 2001, over a million trees representing more than 1,000 species have been planted in the surrounding area. This reforestation has led to a remarkable return of wildlife, with 137 bird species and nine primate species documented thus far. Forest Schools within the sanctuary offer natural and educational spaces for orangutans to learn essential forest skills before returning to their enclosures for the night. The facility also includes a clinic and quarantine area, expanded forest enclosures for larger orangutans, and a specialized 'Babies' Room'. Furthermore, six islands have been created to provide refuge for orangutans with chronic conditions like hepatitis B, preventing their release into the wild. Notably, a dedicated area also shelters a population of over 40 sun bears.Your 8-Day Orangutan Experience

WHAT TO EXPECT
You are embarking on an adventure to places and amongst people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in Indonesia will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the same aspects that make an area an exotic and attractive destination. While boat expeditions are considered easy, no trek is easy, even those rated "easy or moderate". In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this pack a flexible and relaxed attitude. Bring a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humor and a willingness to encounter the unexpected and you will find your trip to Indonesia the adventure of a lifetime!
