EXPEDITION OVERVIEW
This immersive 8-day journey combines the cultural richness of Yogyakarta, the heart of Javanese culture, with the natural wonders of Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan.
Discover the unique culture, arts, and ancient temples of Yogyakarta. Travel in comfort with a private air-conditioned car and an expert guide to explore the magnificent Prambanan and Borobudur temples, along with other significant historical sites. Enjoy your stay in a contemporary boutique hotel offering stunning city views and savor delectable local cuisine in charming restaurants.
Experience the extraordinary Tanjung Puting National Park, a sanctuary for orangutans, the rare proboscis monkey, and the false gavial crocodile. Your accommodation during this part of the adventure will be aboard a traditional river boat, a "klotok," equipped with essential amenities. Sleep comfortably on deck at night on mattresses under mosquito nets. Our dedicated crew will prepare delicious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. The klotok prioritizes your safety with life vests and a first aid kit. Between jungle treks, unwind on deck, observe the fascinating wildlife, read, or simply enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
EXPEDITION GOALS
Our goal is to provide our guests with a unique insight into the cultural aspects of Java as well as observing wild and semi-wild orangutans in their natural habitat. We will provide you with a safe platform for you visit historical sights and to observe the wildlife that Borneo has to offer; including proboscis monkeys, gibbons and more.
We will also provide you with comprehensive information about each destination you are in, so that you are fully informed about your surroundings. Our joint effort with The Orangutan Project continues to support conservation programs in both Borneo and Sumatra. Each guest's fare includes the cost of a one year orangutan adoption package.Â
WHAT TO EXPECT
You are embarking on an adventure to places and amongst people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in Indonesia will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the same aspects that make an area exotic and an attractive destination.
While boat expeditions are considered easy, no trek is easy; even those rated "easy or moderate". In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this "pack" a flexible and relaxed attitude. Bring a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humour and a willingness to encounter the unexpected and you will find your trip to Indonesia the adventure of a lifetime!
ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Denpasar, Bali
Upon arrival at Denpasar Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to the Holiday Inn Resort in Bali for your overnight stay.
Day 2: Yogyakarta: Temples and Culture (Bali to Yogyakarta)
This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Yogyakarta. Upon arrival, your exploration begins with a visit to Prambanan Temple, a significant Hindu complex featuring numerous individual temples on a vast plain. Discover the temple's history and the ongoing restoration efforts. Enjoy an early lunch at a nearby restaurant before proceeding to the Yogyakarta Palace. Immerse yourself in Javanese culture and learn about its continued importance in local life. En route to your hotel, make a brief stop at Taman Sari, the water temple. Your overnight accommodation will be at the Swiss BelBoutique Yogyakarta. (B,L)
Day 3: Mount Merapi and Yogyakarta City (Yogyakarta)
Today's adventure takes you to the Mount Merapi region, approximately 28 kilometers north of Yogyakarta. Board 4WD vehicles to explore the volcano's lava fields. Afterwards, embark on a Yogyakarta city tour, where you will witness the artistry of local batik and silver making. The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure – relax by the pool or explore the shops along Jalan Malioboro. (B,L)
Optional Extra: Enhance your Yogyakarta experience with the captivating Ramayana Ballet, a Hindu love story performed by numerous dancers against the stunning backdrop of Prambanan.
Day 4: Borobudur Sunrise and Semarang (Yogyakarta to Semarang)
An early start takes you to Borobudur to witness a magnificent sunrise over the world's largest Buddhist temple. As the sun ascends, appreciate the temple's tranquility and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Following your Borobudur visit, explore the nearby Buddhist temples of Mendut and Pawon. After lunch at a local restaurant, you will be transferred by car to Semarang for your overnight stay. (B,L)
Day 5: Journey to Borneo (Semarang to Pangkalan Bun)
This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your direct flight to Pangkalan Bun in Borneo. Upon arrival, your Orangutan Odysseys guide will meet you and escort you directly to Kumai harbor. There, you will board your klotok (river boat) and begin your journey into the National Park, observing wildlife along the waterways. Your overnight will be aboard the klotok. (B)
Day 6: Orangutans of Camp Leakey and Crocodile Lake (Pangkalan Bun)
Travel up the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey, the oldest camp dedicated to orphaned orangutans. Upon arrival, enjoy a short trek in the surrounding rainforest, encountering resident orangutans and their caretakers. A visit to the camp's museum follows. Return to the klotok for lunch, keeping an eye out for more orangutans along the riverbanks. After lunch, head downriver to Pondok Tanggui for an orangutan feeding session. Conclude the day with a tour of the adjacent forest area before cruising down the Camp Leakey River to your overnight location at Crocodile Lake. Keep watch for other Bornean wildlife, such as macaques and proboscis monkeys. Overnight on the klotok. (B,L,D)
Day 7: Reforestation and River Wildlife (Rimba Lodge)
Today, journey upriver to Pesalat Plantation, where you will participate in a tree planting initiative to aid forest regeneration. Following lunch, take a tour of the local village. In the afternoon, slowly cruise downriver, observing proboscis monkeys along the riverbanks. As evening approaches, travel back to Kumai harbor and enjoy dinner along the river. Overnight at the Grand Kecubung Hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 8: Departure from Bali (Pangkalan Bun to Denpasar)
This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Bali. Your tour concludes upon your arrival in Denpasar. (B)
