Wild Education Orangutan Eco-tours
Here's what Pakenham Consildated School had to say about their recent tour to Sumatra
We would like to congratulate you on the fantastic tour we experienced in Sumatra in September. From first meeting you in Jakarta to our farewell nine days later we knew we were in good hands. You ensured that our tour covered a wide range of cultural and ecological elements. Your choice of a local guide allowed an insight into the day to day life of the Sumatran people and the hazards they and the wildlife face with the increasing monoculture of palm oil.
We valued being able to contribute (in a very small way) to the reforestation at Halaban and enjoyed the wonderful time with the elephants at Tangkhan. Being fortunate to see two mother orangutans and their babies at the feeding station was surpassed by our sighting of the male on the trek. Our guide on the trek and the porters at the camp site knew their stuff! There was so much we learnt and we were looked after like queens—the food was plentiful and we always had bottled water supplied. Our visit to the school was a pleasure and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves with a view to keeping in touch.
Our last night, tired as we were, wrapped the tour off beautifully by putting what we had experienced into perspective and realising the mammoth task ahead to save the orangutan. What we really liked was the personalised nature of the tour—being able to alter our itinerary to suit our interest and energy levels.
We are already planning our 2014 Educational tour with our Grade 5 students and know that, with your help it will be tailored to suit our every need."
