Currently this island is be a popular tourism destination.

Lombok’s sacred volcano, the world famous Gunung Rinjani, soars 3,726 m above sea level and is the second highest volcano in Indonesia. It attracts thousands of trekkers and climbers annually. This trek starts in Sembalun Lawang and ends in Senaru and includes Mt Rinjani’s crater rim and summit, Segara Anak Lake and the sacred hot-springs. The Rinjani National Park is a nature reserve of 41,330 hectares surrounding the volcano. The whole area is a picturesque haven, featuring magnificent waterfalls and lush and accessible jungle. It will not be an easy journey, but hopefully an unforgettable one.

This route is especially designed for adventurers that want to take their time to discover the Rinjani. In 4 days you will have enough time to enjoy every single aspect that makes this mountain special.

Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three islands and attracts the majority of visitors, it is around thirty minutes boat ride from the northwest mainland of Lombok and regular daily fast boats depart Bali directly to Trawangan island and all boats stop off at Teluk Nare on mainland Lombok as part of the return journey. The beaches of the Gilis are still powdery white, the water a beautiful clear blue and they are positioned perfectly for sunsets over Bali’s Mt Agung and sunrise over Lombok’s Mt Rinjani. Thirty years ago the Gili islands were uninhabited and only discovered by the seafaring Bugis people from Sulawesi. It was only a matter of time before the more adventurous backpacker types discovered the islands and developed Trawangan into a hippy party paradise destination.

Enjoy breakfast on route before we meet your guide at the Gunung Rinjani Information Centre and begin the trek. The first day is challenging with 1600 mt in height gained over 7-8 hrs trekking. The trek starts on relatively easy tracks through open grassland and along the fringes of local farms. There are many dry creek bed crossings across timber bridges and there is a good chance of a meeting the cheeky grey macaque monkeys on the way . You will walk through forests dominated by beautiful casuarinas known locally as Cemara as you pass through rest areas at Position 2 (1500m) and Pada Balong (1800m). From here the track gets noticeably steeper and some hard work awaits you on the long haul up to base camp at Plawangan II. From your campsite the summit looks deceptively close and the views of the crater rim and lake absolutely stunning. This is a good time to take stock of your fitness and how you are feeling generally before you decide if an attempt of the summit is for you. Your porters shall prepare your campsite complete with tents and sleeping equipment. Overnight campsite. (B, L, D)

Day 3: Crater Rim – Summit – Segara Anak Lake

At 3 am and the summit awaits! Your guide will wake you and help you prepare for the arduous 3-4 hour ascent of the mountain. Its takes approximately 1 hour to get from base camp to the exposed ridge line that leads to the summit. From there your work rate will significantly increase as the air thins out and the track steepens. The last 400 meteres of the ascent is particularly hard as you are climbing on loose volcanic scree. The reward for your efforts is the sensational view from atop Mt Rinjani. Looking out to the west you can see the Gili Islands, Bali, Mt. Agung and even Java in the distance. To the east , island of Sumbawa is clearly visible. Below you the crater lake and its new cones look post card perfect. Spend some time on the roof of Indonesia to take a few photos, reflect and get your breath back before heading back down the ridge line to base camp. Your mornings work should take you about 5-6 hrs all up. After breakfast we will head down to the crater lake (Danau Segara Anak). The track is steep as it winds its way down to the lake. It should take 3-4 hrs to get to the campsite on the shores of the lake. Take a well earned rest before heading for the hot springs (Aiq Kalak) an easy 5 min walk away. Soak away the sweat of a hard days trekking in the series of hot pools that are a popular destination for local people. If you still have some energy explore the Milk Caves, an easy 90 min return walk from your campsite. Overnight campsite. (B, L, D)

Day 4: Segara Anak Lake – Crater Rim

Enjoy the 30 min walk along the edge of the lake before starting the trek upwards towards the crater rim and Pelawangan (Crater Rim). The track steepens as you ascend with the last hour being very taxing on the rocky track. Campsites on the rim itself are small and you will find yourself literally perched above the lake below. The sunset here is not too be missed. Darkness will reveal the lights of the Gilis and small towns on the mountain's flanks . The campsite on the crater rim is one of the best experiences you will have while trekking Rinjani. Overnight campsite. (B,L,D)

MOUNT RINJANI VOLCANO

Mount Rinjani or Gunung Rinjani is an active volcano in Indonesia on the island of Lombok. Administratively the mountain is in the Regency of North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara ( NTB ). It rises to 3,726 metres (12,224 ft), making it the second highest volcano in Indonesia. On the top of the volcano is a 6 by 8.5 kilometre (3.7 by 5.3 mi) caldera, which is filled partially by the crater lake known as Segara Anak or Anak Laut (Child of the Sea) due to blue color of water lake as Laut (Sea). This lake is approximately 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above sea level and estimated to be about 200 metres (660 ft) deep the caldera also contains hot springs. Sasak tribe and Hindu people assume the lake and the mount are sacred and some religion activities are occasionally done in the two areas. And a massive eruption of Rinjani in 1257 CE may have triggered an episode of global cooling and failed harvests.

The highlands are forest clad and mostly undeveloped. The lowlands are highly cultivated. Rice, soybeans, coffee, tobacco, cotton, cinnamon, cacao, cloves, cassava, corn, coconuts, copra, bananas and vanilla are the major crops grown in the fertile soils of the island. The slopes are populated by the indigenous Sasak population. There are also some basic tourist related activities established on Rinjani primarily in or about the village of Senaru.
